Important Hacks Every Driver Must Know: How To Adjust A Clutch
Encountering some minor issues with your vehicle is very reasonable. Manual or automatic transmission cars, both are equally likely to experience problems. That is most especially true if you use your vehicle regularly.

How Your Clutch Works
Now, before you go on tinkering with your clutch, it is essential that you familiarize yourself first with how it works. You need to know this especially if you have absolutely no background about the issue.
Although the task is as simple as adjusting a clutch, there will still be some things you have to know. The clutch pedal is a very integral part of a manual vehicle’s engine. It is also what separates the automatic from manual transmission vehicles.
If you have been driving a manual vehicle for quite some time now, you’d know that it is impossible to shift gears without stepping on the clutch pedal. The gear shifting would only engage after you release the clutch pedal.
The Parts and Their Tasks
Also, the clutch pedal is also handy when you want to slow down to a complete halt or break smoothly. So, to make all of these happen, the clutch has several parts. It has the flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc, bearing and release system.
As you step on the clutch pedal, the clutch assembly disengages. But as you release the lever, the friction surfaces of the clutch disc both make contact with metal surfaces. Such as those of the flywheel and pressure plate.
The power of the engine then transfers to the transmission input shaft and the gears. Such as those of the flywheel and pressure plate. To avoid engine stalling, just make sure that the speed of the engine matches the engagement of friction surfaces or your clutch.
Things You Will Be Needing
There are two types of clutch adjustments. The self-adjusting clutch pedal only needs to be lifted upwards then pressed down. However, for manual clutch adjustment, there are some things you will be preparing:
- Socket and wrench set – keep these two nearby in case you have to remove some parts of the engine to adjust the clutch
- Eye protection – this is very important to protect your eyes from shrapnel or toxic substances
- Block of wood – this will come in handy in measuring the clutch pedal free play
- Measuring tape
- Marker/pencil – this will be used to make your markings on the block of wood for the clutch pedal free play
Step 1. Check and measure first the clutch pedal free play
Before adjusting anything else, you have to check the clutch pedal free play first. Use the block of wood and pencil to mark the height of the pedal without pressing down on it. After this process, you have to set the other side of the intersection of wood beside the lever.
Press on the pedal and feel when it engages. Mark the height of the lever on the block of wood when you think the clutch has engaged. Having the measurements of those two would now give you an idea of the clutch pedal free play.
Step 2. Remove all the parts that have to you need to take off to find the clutch lever before adjusting
Make sure to remove all parts needed first to locate the clutch lever. While some vehicles do not need for this, some need to have their battery or airbox removed. See if your car has a lock nut and an adjuster nut.
If you’re unable to find the two, you need to consult your vehicle’s manufacturer or manual. After determining the two, loosen the lock nut first then the adjuster nut just slightly. Do not forget to pull the clutch cable up so you can turn the lock nut and the adjuster nut by hand.
Step 3. You can now adjust the clutch lever
After loosening the lock nut and the adjuster nut, be sure to pull up on the cable again to engage the clutch lever. After you join the clutch lever, this is where you will be able to adjust the clutch cable as well.
Remember to keep constant pressure on your clutch cable. The lever should fully and smoothly engage with no overtravel at all. And if you’re already happy with the placement, tighten the locknut and adjuster nut back again.
Step 4. Return any parts removed before testing
Re-install all the parts you’ve removed earlier first before testing your newly adjusted clutch. But as for the testing and checking, you can start by stepping and releasing on the clutch pedal. Take note of its feel and free play.
You should be able to make your clutch engage smoothly and come back up after you release the pedal. However, do remember to keep the free play range within the manufacturer’s specifications to avoid problems.
Wrapping Things Up
Always remember, it is critical to have your clutch appropriately adjusted. Because if not, you are increasing the chances of the grip wearing out unevenly. And an uneven wearing of the clutch can cause it to slip or produce potential hazards and accidents.
